Wairoa, Hawke's Bay, Local Activities and Attractions


Set on the banks of the beautiful Wairoa River, the town was established as a port and service centre for northern Hawkes Bay, and was reliant on shipping until the road & rail link was established in 1930. The Wairoa river is an ideal place for the many water sports, including yachting, rowing, water skiing, jet skiing and swimming. Wairoa provides great weather and a life style very much jandals and shorts.

Morere Hotsprings Scenic Reserve

State Highway 2, Nuhaka - 45km (35min drive)
Set in 364 hectares of native bush, Morere Hotsprings provides modern bathing and spa facilities in a beautiful natural environment. Walking tracks range from 20 mins to a challenging 2 – 3 hours hike in one of the last remaining lowland native rainforest on the East Coast. Beautiful stands of Nikau Palms grow abundantly in this lovely setting. Approximately 40km’s north of the Wairoa Township on SH 2, towards Gisborne.

Lake Waikaremoana

State Highway 38 - 60km (1hr 15mins drive)
The jewel in the crown, Lake Waikaremoana, and it’s little sister Lake Waikareiti, are set perfectly in the 225,000 hectares of Te Ureuwera National Park – The largest untouched nature forest reserve in the North Island. The 3-4 day hike around the lake is one of the great walks of New Zealand. There is also a network of long & short walks to suit all ages – a must see when in Wairoa.

Mahia Peninsula

Kinikini Rd - 50km (45min drive)
Mahia Peninsula is a mecca for people who love the sea. Boat launch facilities on both sides of the peninsula allow access to the excellent offshore fishing. There are also plenty of great, safe and sandy beaches, perfect for swimming and surfing – Seeing is believing.

Portland Island

Off the southern tip of the Mahia Peninsula
The original home of Wairoa’s lighthouse, this is one of the earliest lighthouse sites in New Zealand. Portland Island now has an automated light and is run by DoC. Great fishing and diving in beautiful clean water.
